Keep shop money and home money apart

Taking a little from the cash drawer for home feels harmless. The problem appears later: the shop looks busy, the money is gone, and you cannot say whether the business made a profit or not.

Give each its own book

Keep one book for the shop and one for home. If you run two businesses, give each its own book too. You can still see all your businesses together, while personal money stays apart.

Your own money is not income

When you put your savings into the shop, that is not income. When you take money home, that is not spending. Record both as the owner's money. Your income and spending figures then show the real business.

Pay yourself on purpose

Decide an amount, and take it on a fixed day. It is easier to plan a home budget on a steady amount, and the shop's cash stops disappearing in small pieces.

Look at one number each month

At the end of the month, look at income against spending. If you spent more than you earned, you know early, while there is still time to do something about it.
