How to keep a simple money book for your shop

Most shops do not fail because nobody could count. They struggle because nobody wrote it down on the day it happened. A money book fixes that, and it does not need accounting knowledge.

Answer three questions every day

A good money book answers three things at a glance:

If you can answer these without searching, you are already ahead of most businesses.

Write it when it happens

Do not save entries for the evening. By night you will have forgotten one small credit sale, and that is exactly the money you never collect. Write it while the customer is still in front of you. It takes a few seconds.

Use only two words

Every credit deal is one of two things: you gave or you got. Gave goods to Ram on credit? You gave. Ram paid part of it? You got. His balance adds up by itself.

Count the cash once a day

At closing time, count the drawer and compare it with the book. A small difference caught today is easy to explain. The same difference found after a month is a mystery.

Start from today

Do not try to copy old years. Write down what people owe you today and what is in your cash and bank, and begin from there. In Account Runway you can first try a sample shop with made-up entries, then remove it in one tap when you are ready.
